Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Student Services (GLBTSS) offer services and programming for all students at Ohio State. Our goal is to help GLBT students thrive at The Ohio State University through leading engaged, balanced lives, and having opportunities to grow and develop as individuals.
Emphasizing wellness, leadership, service and diversity, GLBTSS exists as a resource to help students navigate their experiences at Ohio State. GLBTSS welcomes all students and promotes diversity awareness of all genders, races, and sexual orientations.
History
Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Student Services was established in 1990, making it the 6th oldest office in the country created to provide support to GLBT students. GLBTSS was formed in the wake of a campus study that found that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students often faced a hostile climate at Ohio State. Not only were homophobic attitudes widespread, but this hostility was frequently manifested through verbal attacks, vandalism, and violence, creating an atmosphere that lessened the quality of life for GLBT students and anyone perceived to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. The office set to work on making the campus climate more conducive to GLBT students through providing support and advocacy and by offering GLBT-related activities and educational programming throughout the year. These efforts were greatly aided in 2000 by funding through OSU's Diversity Action Plan for the development and implementation of a university-wide anti-heterosexism educational program.
